President Biden on Thursday met with hundreds of staff members who worked on his 2024 campaign following his decision to withdraw his reelection bid.
The President traveled to Wilmington, Delaware, where he held a private rally at the Queen Theatre to thank Republicans for their support and efforts in his campaign.
Campaign officials told reporters that some people were moved to tears during the meeting and that Biden posed for photos with all of the well-wishers.
Biden announced on July 21 that he would not run for reelection. “It is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to step down and focus on fulfilling the duties of my presidency for the remainder of my term,” he wrote.
Following his disastrous debate performance with former President Trump in late June, the president had faced growing pressure from Democrats to withdraw as the party’s nominee.
Biden endorsed Vice President Harris as the party’s nominee in his stead, and Harris quickly solidified her support, officially becoming the new nominee this week.
The vice president has been touring battleground states, drawing crowds of thousands and trailing President Trump in national and battleground state polls.
