Biden to hit campaign trail for Harris in Pennsylvania

President Biden said he plans to campaign for Vice President Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state in the November election.

Biden spoke with Robert Costa on CBS’ “Sunday Morning,” marking his first interview since announcing in late July that he was dropping out of the presidential race against former President Trump.

During the interview, Costa asked the president whether Americans intended for him to accompany Harris to campaign events.

“Yes, that’s true,” Biden said, adding that he speaks to Harris constantly.

Biden then spoke about his running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz, calling him a “great guy” and saying they would have been friends if they had grown up in the same area.

“He’s my kind of guy. Yes, he’s the real deal. Yes, he’s smart,” Biden said. “I’ve known him for decades.”

Costa asked how the president would respond to those who have expressed skepticism about his health, the length of his term and Harris’ campaign.

“All I can say is, keep watching,” Biden said. “That’s it. I was sick during the debate, so I had a really bad day, but nothing serious.”

At the CNN presidential debate in Atlanta on June 27, the 81-year-old incumbent Biden’s slow speech and stuttering during questions sparked widespread panic among Democrats, with pundits, commentators and some party donors calling for Biden to step aside and put forward a younger, more capable candidate.

Biden told Costa that he had been in touch with his “friend,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, about the president’s victory in his home state.

“He and I are planning a campaign trip in Pennsylvania,” Biden said, “and we’ll be campaigning in other states. I’m going to be there to help Kamala as much as I can.”
