Biden to mark D-Day anniversary with remarks in France

The White House announced Thursday that President Biden will deliver a speech in France next month to mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

Biden will visit Normandy on June 5 and deliver a speech on the 6th. He will then take part in other events with first lady Jill Biden on the anniversary, including greeting and paying tribute to veterans and their families who landed on Normandy’s Utah and Omaha beaches in 1944.

Last year, the president issued a proclamation commemorating the 79th anniversary of the Normandy landings, saying the soldiers who served that day “represent the greatest generation in our nation’s history.”

The president will speak in Pont-du-Hoc, France, on June 7 before traveling to Paris on June 8 for a state visit with French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte.

King Charles III is also due to visit France to attend British ceremonies marking D-Day.

Biden’s meetings with foreign leaders will be a respite from domestic travel in the lead-up to the November election campaign, with the president visiting Philadelphia this week and Massachusetts and New Hampshire last week.

When he returns to the US in late June, he will hold major fundraising events in Los Angeles with former President Obama and in Virginia with former President Clinton.
