Biden to meet with union leaders amid effort to solidify base following debate

Biden is scheduled to meet with national labor union leaders on Wednesday and hold consultations with key allies as part of a week-long effort to shore up his base and counter calls from Democrats to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

According to the Biden campaign, Biden will attend the AFL-CIO executive committee meeting in Washington, D.C., to meet with leaders in attendance and discuss the importance of the November election. Biden is expected to give a short speech and answer questions from union leaders.

Attendees included national representatives of 60 labor unions representing more than 12 million workers, according to his campaign, and Biden has frequently touted himself as the most pro-union president in history.

One official called it “the latest example this week of President Biden rallying the Biden-Harris coalition around this election.”

Biden has been trying all week to consolidate the support of the key voting bloc that propelled him to the White House in 2020 amid growing calls from Democratic lawmakers for him to step down as the party’s nominee.

Seven House Democrats have publicly called on Biden to step down as a candidate, and several House and Senate Democrats have said Biden needs to campaign aggressively and do more to demonstrate he can claim a second term.

But now that the president has made clear he has no plans to leave office, an overwhelming majority of Democrats in Congress are backing Biden, and the White House has touted support from members of the House Black Caucus, the House Hispanic Caucus and even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) to claim he has broad support.

The president campaigned in Pennsylvania on Sunday this week. Called Biden gave an unscripted interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday morning and met virtually with the Congressional Black Caucus that evening. On Tuesday, he attended the opening ceremony of the NATO summit and met virtually with Democratic mayors.

“The president will continue to be out in the field and speaking directly to his supporters in the coming days, weeks and months,” the campaign said, adding that the president is scheduled to visit Michigan on Friday and Texas and Nevada next week.
