President Joe Biden is interrupting his beach weekend and returning to the White House as Israeli and U.S. forces in the Middle East prepare for the possibility of an imminent attack by Iran.
Biden was in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and was originally scheduled to return Sunday, CNN reported.
The president will return to the White House on Saturday to “consult with his national security team regarding events in the Middle East,” the administration confirmed.
Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris previously raised eyebrows by flying out of Washington, D.C., as tensions between Israel and Iran reached a boiling point.
While Biden left for a beach getaway, Harris was on the campaign trail in Tucson, Arizona, on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Iranian government is expected to launch a direct attack on Israel soon, a move that Biden himself sternly warned against in a press conference on Friday.
Threats from Iran following Israel’s assassination in Damascus of a senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards leader have increased the possibility of a broader regional conflict.
As of Friday, the U.S. had moved two guided missile destroyers capable of intercepting drones and incoming missiles closer to Israel in preparation for an attack, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The country is also prepared to help Israel intercept missiles from Iran.
