Biden won’t call for redactions in special counsel report on classified documents handling

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden will not seek any redactions to the Justice Department special counsel’s report investigating the handling of classified documents, the White House announced Thursday, paving the way for its release.

White House Counsel Ian Sams said the White House notified the Justice Department Thursday morning that it had completed its review of the report.

“In keeping with his promise of cooperation and transparency throughout this investigation, the president declined to claim privilege over any part of the report,” he said.

The year-long investigation centered on Biden’s improper storage of classified documents from his time as senator and vice president.

The confidential records were discovered in 2022 and 2023 at his home in Delaware and in a private office he used during the Obama administration and before he took office.

The case comes amid a wide-ranging Justice Department investigation leading to charges against former President Donald Trump for allegedly illegally keeping classified documents after leaving office and refusing to turn them over to federal officials when asked. It was done.

A White House review of potential executive privilege concerns appeared to be the final hurdle before the report was released to Congress and the public.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a letter to Congress Wednesday that he is committed to releasing as many documents as possible once the White House completes its review.
