Biden’s DHS Offers ‘Temporary’ Amnesty to Over 15K Ethiopians in U.S.

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is redesignating and extending a temporary amnesty program for more than 15,000 Ethiopians living in the United States who are subject to deportation.

On Friday, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 15,100 Ethiopians living in the United States, which allows them to secure work permits, obtain American jobs, and protect them from deportation. did.

“Temporary Protected Status provides individuals already in the United States with protection from deportation when conditions in their home country make it difficult for them to return safely,” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement. He said:

That is the situation facing Ethiopians who arrived here before April 11 of this year. We are giving them protection through this temporary humanitarian relief provided by law. [Emphasis added]

Approximately 2,300 Ethiopians in the United States will maintain their TPS designation, which can be extended until December 2025, but an additional 12,800 Ethiopians have been in the country since April 11. As long as you declare this to a DHS official, you will be eligible for TPS status. Or before that.

Additionally, Mayorkas announced so-called “Special Student Relief” for Ethiopians who are in the United States on F-1 student visas. “Eligible students can apply for employment authorization, increase their work hours during the class period, and reduce their course load while continuing to maintain their F-1 status throughout the TPS designation period.”

TPS was first created under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) of 1990 to prevent federal immigration officials from deporting people from countries designated as experiencing famine, war, or natural disaster. .

Since the Clinton administration, TPS has transformed into a de facto amnesty program through Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Trump, and now the Biden administration is continually updating the program for different countries.

As Breitbart News reported, Biden significantly increased the number of foreign nationals residing in the United States without any immigration status other than TPS. Currently, nearly 1.2 million foreign nationals are in the United States using TPS.
