During Friday’s MSNBC broadcast of “All In,” Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) urged President Joe Biden to “step down and let somebody else take over,” saying, “[F]A few years ago, there was a different Joe Biden.”
“Representatives Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) and Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) have publicly said the president should step down and replace him with another candidate. Do you agree with them?” host Chris Hayes asked.
Quigley responded: “I started this week in an interview talking about everything else, and then this came up and I asked for help finding the words, and I just couldn’t help it, because it was like I was talking to a loved one about such a tough situation. How do you tell someone who got us out of COVID, got us out of tyranny, and accomplished so many great things, that you can’t do it anymore? So I started by thanking him, showing my respect, and suggesting that his decision will affect not only who sits in the White House for the next four years, but who controls the House and the Senate. These are very close races for those frontline seats. And of course the House and the Senate are decided by single digits, and all these important votes that everyone cares about very much. So to those of you who say everything’s OK, I want to say it’s not. Everything that you care about is at stake. You have to be realistic, you have to be tough. So the way that I say this has probably changed since that day, because I think if I had time to take it in and then I’d look at the polls and I’d talk to the president, I’d say something different.”
Hayes continued: “But you haven’t answered the question: Do you agree with Raul Grijalva, Lloyd Doggett and Seth Moulton? Should the president step down?”
Quigley responded, “How he got to that point with him was something I had a hard time understanding, and I think anybody who respects him would. Mr. President, your legacy is set. We owe you the utmost. The only thing he can do now to cement that forever and prevent total catastrophe is to step down and let somebody else take over, because I think we’re in a pitched battle again from day one. All of a sudden, everything we’re talking about with President Biden, we’ve got a lot more to talk about with Trump. Not just that he lied 28 times during the debate and that he’s an absolute monster, but he has cognitive issues, which is something that the Honorable Speaker Pelosi (D-Calif.) brought up earlier this week. She’s absolutely right.”
Quigley concluded: “[F]A few years ago, there was a different Joe Biden.”
