A Politico columnist criticized President Biden for including liberal figures such as Hillary Clinton and billionaire George Soros in his final selection for the Medal of Freedom.
Politico senior editor Michael Schaefer wrote: They said Biden's choice of award sends a strong signal that Democrats are “out of touch” and argued that an honor that was once beyond politics has now become a new political battleground.

Schaefer wrote that Biden's selection, announced on Jan. 4, is in fact indicative of a cadre of winners who were unable to defeat President-elect Trump during the campaign.
“Despite their cultural and humanitarian accomplishments, Mr. Winter and Mr. Andres are not selling products that ordinary Americans can afford,” Schaefer wrote. “The Romney and Cheney Republicans lost the election because they were unpopular (Cheney's support didn't help the Democratic candidates this year either).”
Former Sen. Mitt Romney received the medal posthumously on behalf of his late father, George Romney, a three-term Republican governor of Michigan.
“To some Republicans, it seemed like an act of vandalism, especially to those who were particularly repulsed by the participation of George Soros, a funder of liberal causes and a longtime target of conservative smear campaigns. It felt like ,” Schaefer wrote.
Liberal Washington Post columnist predicts Biden will not leave much of a lasting legacy.
