In an interview aired Friday on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the Biden administration “will step up and do more” to Europe regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. He said that he had asked the police to do the following.
asked co-host Steve Inkeep. [relevant exchange begins around 5:50] “Some of the Republicans who have spoken on this show have said that Europe should get stronger. They should pay more. I wonder if that’s possible for these reasons. I’m curious: Ukraine started the war with a lot of old Soviet and Russian equipment. They partially transitioned to a lot of US-made weapons. Is that essential, their armament? Is it absolutely essential that the United States continues to support them because of the method?”
In response, Sullivan said, “While U.S. support is essential, it is consistent with asking European countries to redouble their efforts and efforts, which we have done and which European countries have responded to.” “Yes,” he replied. In fact, a significant portion of the military aid currently being sent to Ukraine comes from European allies and partners. We have brought together a coalition of 50 countries and made significant contributions in weapons systems and other capabilities. But to answer your question, there is no substitute for the resources and capabilities that only the United States can provide. ”
