Biden Aide Questioned by House Investigators

On Thursday, long-time allies of former President Joe Biden took the stand before House investigators. Michael Donilon, who served as a senior adviser during Biden’s presidency, was expected to have a closed-door, transcribed interview with staff from the House Oversight Committee. This session could drag on for several hours.

Representative Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, is probing whether Biden’s actions have concealed potential signs of a decline in his mental faculties. There’s some concern regarding whether enforcement actions were signed using an autopen, possibly without Biden’s awareness.

Interestingly, Comer has dismissed attempts from Biden’s doctor to disrupt this investigation, saying they’re “dropping all excuses.” Donilon’s experiences, spanning decades with Biden, may provide insights crucial to the inquiry.

He first joined Biden in 1981, working as a strategist during Biden’s early Senate years in Delaware. Over the years, he played significant roles, including Chief Strategist for Biden’s campaigns in 2020 and 2024, until Biden pulled out of the re-election race in July 2024.

It’s worth noting that Donilon voiced his concerns at a Harvard event earlier this year, criticizing Democrats for losing momentum and heart in the 2024 election due to earlier decisions made about Biden. This scrutiny follows another former aide, Steve Richetti, who met with investigators on Wednesday.

Alongside Donilon, three other Biden administration officials appeared before the House Oversight Committee under subpoenas, and all opted to invoke their Fifth Amendment rights during questioning.

As this investigation intensifies, Donilon has stated, rather confidently, that he never had concerns about Biden’s mental state in the past. Some interviews conducted so far have reportedly lasted over five hours, indicating the depth of the inquiry.

At a recent event, it was suggested that there might have been efforts within the administration to shield Biden from unfavorable information. Such a strategy could prompt Congress to contemplate legislative measures if it is determined that staff were deliberately concealing Biden’s status.
