Biden’s old age concerns aren’t going away soon, CNN reporter says: ‘This isn’t Benjamin Button here’

Following the Wall Street Journal reporting that some lawmakers and officials are concerned about Biden’s declining mental health, CNN’s Jackie Kucinich said doubts about Biden’s mental health are unlikely to go away.

“That’s not going to go away,” Kucinich said. “He’s not going to get any younger.”

“This isn’t Benjamin Button,” she added, a reference to the character from the 2008 film of the same name who ages in reverse. “This is Joe Biden.”

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, one of 45 people interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, shared his impressions of Biden’s intellectual capacity.

“I used to see him a lot when he was vice president. I used to go to his house,” he said. “He’s just not the same person anymore.”

Kucinich said it was clear Biden’s advisers were concerned that his age would become an issue in the presidential race, pointing to reports that the White House had contacted lawmakers and asked them to refer their comments to The Wall Street Journal.

“You watch the Democrats that The Wall Street Journal is interviewing and if you don’t think that’s a weakness, then you shouldn’t have them come back to highlight Biden’s strengths,” Kucinich said. [the Biden campaign] All they can do is present him in the strongest possible light.”

She also said the first debate between Biden and former President Trump, scheduled for June 27 on CNN, will be crucial in convincing voters of Biden’s mental health.

At 81, Biden is the oldest person to hold the presidency and has faced skepticism from voters and Republicans about his ability to do the job as he faces off against Trump in November. When he met with congressional leaders in January to negotiate additional aid for Ukraine, Mr. Biden spoke in a low voice at times, making it hard for some to hear, five people familiar with the conversation told The Wall Street Journal. Mr. Biden also relied on notes to make clear his points and was silent or had his eyes closed for long periods of time.
