Last month, when the White House shared a photo of a gold-framed Autopen on the Presidential Walk of Honor near the West Wing, it symbolized more than just an extraordinary act by former President Trump. It seemed to capture the essence of Joe Biden’s troubled presidency.
The somber picture, positioned among past presidents from George Washington to Donald Trump, illustrates what many view as Biden’s shortcomings in leadership. It’s not just about losing opportunities; it raises concerns about a leader whose evident flaws have been exacerbated by what some see as cognitive decline.
Surprisingly, while many have witnessed Biden’s decline firsthand, it struck a chord when the House Oversight Committee released a detailed 100-page report outlining the issue, which included video interviews with individuals close to Biden.
Historical Documents
The report, titled “The Biden Presidency: Decline, Delusion, and Deception in the White House,” made public on Tuesday, is a significant historical account. Even if the Oversight Committee Chairman, James Comer, may not achieve all his ambitious goals, like invalidating many of Biden’s executive actions and pardons, the findings are worth noting.
According to the report, as President Biden’s health deteriorated, his staff began making decisions without his awareness, which included misusing autopen technology and bypassing proper documentation.
The narrative painted within the report characterizes a president overly shielded by his wife, Jill Biden, their son Hunter, and three key aides—Jill’s chief of staff, Anthony Bernal, Annie Tomasini, and White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor. It suggests that O’Connor misled the public with inaccurate medical assessments, notably never conducting a cognitive test on Biden. All three aides invoked the Fifth Amendment when called to testify.
Comer has urged the Justice Department to conduct a probe into all executive actions under Biden’s presidency and has reported O’Connor to the District of Columbia Medical Board for potential malpractice.
Watching their congressional testimonies, one might find it striking how unremarkable Biden’s advisors appeared.
In a way, their responses felt akin to the vague statements offered by Vice President Kamala Harris and Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during their book tours. Yet, this choice of inner circle seems telling; Biden appeared to prefer surrounding himself with individuals who would not challenge him or appear more intelligent.
From this lens, the Biden administration has been characterized as one lacking meritocracy. His aides seemed more focused on participating in Biden’s narratives and delusions rather than serving the nation’s interests, possibly driven by aspirations for power and influence.
As Biden’s decline seemingly paralyzed his administration, the instinct to cover it up became prevalent. Despite appearances, Biden should not be portrayed merely as a well-meaning elderly man with a faulty memory.
An Aide Ran the Show
The report asserts that “loyalty among aides to the Biden family fostered an environment that obscured the former president’s cognitive decline.” They allegedly utilized various tactics, including makeup and a cushy schedule, to disguise the reality of Biden’s condition.
These aides made regular trips to Wilmington, Delaware, to provide care while Biden largely withdrew from public view during the 2020 campaign, citing COVID-19 as an excuse.
Comer identified several influential figures who played significant roles in this dynamic. Their close ties with Biden afforded them considerable power and influence within the administration.
Notably, Donilon, a longtime strategist, indicated he aimed to earn $8 million by keeping Biden in the 2024 race, plus a potential bonus if Biden were to win reelection.
Additionally, Dr. O’Connor reportedly formed financial connections with the Biden family and facilitated relationships for Biden’s brother, James, with healthcare executives.
Hiding
The report hints that Dr. O’Connor’s connections to the Biden family might imply motives to conceal the president’s deterioration from the public eye. Toward the end of Biden’s presidency, murmurs of Hunter stepping in started surfacing as Joe appeared increasingly sidelined.
Zients noted Hunter’s participation in discussions about pardons, which included various controversial figures and family members. It showcased a troubling blend of family and political maneuvering.
Biden and his political bureau have arguably undermined the country. The failures in Afghanistan, the handling of borders, spiraling inflation due to unchecked spending, and questionable diplomatic strategies are only a glimpse into a presidency marked by incompetence.
Ultimately, Biden’s failures have facilitated a shift within the Democratic Party, leading to younger progressives feeling they had no choice but to rally against veteran leadership.
Zoran Mamdani has emerged as a notable figure within this evolving political landscape, possibly signaling a turning point for the party.
