The Swamp is so deeply entrenched in the nation’s capital that it wouldn’t even allow one of its own creatures to resign in shame following the botched Afghanistan retreat in August of 2021.
After the U.S. military’s retreat from the Central Asian country, which left 13 service members dead, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan offered to resign from his post, according to The Washington Post columnist David Ignatius. Aides told Ignatius that Sullivan was preparing to quit as the retreat quickly went awry with the terrorist bombing at the Kabul Airport.
However, President Joe Biden reportedly urged Sullivan to stay on his team, creating a rift between him and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. (RELATED: One Of Biden’s Last Acts: Participation Trophies For The Worst Of The Swamp)
Sullivan stayed, of course.

“You cannot end a war like Afghanistan, where you’ve built up dependencies and pathologies, without the end being complex and challenging,” he told Ignatius.
“The choice was: Leave, and it would not be easy, or stay forever,” Sullivan said, arguing that “leaving Kabul freed the [United States] to deal with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in ways that might have been impossible if we had stayed.”
No major cabinet member or official from the Pentagon or the State Department resigned in the aftermath of the Afghanistan retreat, which will go down as one of the worst scandals during Biden’s presidency. Not Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who was quite involved before and during the retreat, nor Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman retired Gen. Mark Milley, who helped coordinate strategy and operations. At the time, Milley was the highest-ranking member of the military.
At least Sullivan offered to resign, but even then, if he had the guts, if he had a scintilla of integrity, he would have done it. The swamp creature that he is, Biden gave Sullivan a pass. The lesson here is that the swamp will never hold each other accountable; that they will always protect their own, even to the detriment of the country.
