In recent years, as the political environment has become increasingly polarized, fluctuations in presidential approval ratings have been decreasing. Democrats typically approve of their own party's president and disapprove of their Republican president, and vice versa.
Gallup's analysis reveals this trend. Looking at the average approval ratings for the third year of every president since Eisenhower, the average partisan gap was largest in Trump's third year (82 points), followed by Biden's third year (78 points).
Mr. Biden's average approval rating in his third year was 83%, the highest among Democrats since Gallup began polling in the 1950s, and the lowest ever among Republicans at 5%.
President Trump's average approval rating among Republicans in his third year was 89%, tied with his elder President Bush and second only to Eisenhower, who averaged 91% approval among Republicans. But Trump's average approval rating among Democrats in his third year also hit an all-time low of 7%.
The average national poll from The Hill/Decision Desk Headquarters for a hypothetical 2024 matchup between Biden and Trump shows Trump leading by 2.2 percentage points, followed by Biden at 41.6 percent with 43.8 percent support.
