Big 12 Conference responds to offensive chants from UCF fans aimed at BYU during surprising victory

UCF Knights Pull Off Stunning Upset Over BYU in Thrilling Overtime Match

This past weekend in Orlando, the UCF Knights achieved one of the most unexpected victories of the college football season. It was a game filled with classic, bewildering moments in the fourth quarter that ultimately pushed the game into overtime, resulting in a win that could change the course of the program.

Honestly, it was quite astonishing, not only because of the way the game unfolded but also because of the outcome. There were a number of dramatic plays—a blocked field goal, a critical goalline stop, and even an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, all leading up to the tension-filled overtime. Following that were two overtime periods packed with even more excitement. And, of course, the fans stormed the field afterward. Meanwhile, BYU, which had just come off an impressive victory against Notre Dame that altered the College Football Playoff landscape and boosted them into the top two, ended up losing as clear favorites.

However, what was even more surprising happened before the game even started.

Before the Game

As the game began, video footage from inside the stadium showed some UCF fans chanting “f— the Mormons,” taking a shot at BYU’s religious background. College football rivalries can definitely breed some intense banter, but this crossed a line. While harmless teasing is part of the culture, targeting a school’s religion is quite a bit much.

Security had to step in and remove some fans, but the Big 12 Conference reacted with a stronger statement on Wednesday afternoon.

“The Conference acknowledges the pregame protocols that UCF adhered to and the immediate actions taken to address the behavior in the stands, including removing certain individuals,” their statement read. “However, discriminatory actions have no place within the Big 12.”

To address the situation, the Big 12 has fined UCF $100,000, which will go towards student education initiatives. Additionally, they are rolling out a new conference-wide policy to impose stricter penalties for discriminatory behavior at sporting events, starting right away.

The new policy stipulates that the first such incident will incur an “automatic minimum $100,000 fine” along with a formal warning to the institution, which will be required to take immediate measures to prevent future occurrences.

Now, if similar misconduct occurs again, the penalties escalate further. A second confirmed incident could trigger competitive penalties, such as a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in football or an unsportsmanlike technical foul in basketball.

Anyone ejected for racist or discriminatory behavior will be banned from all athletic events for the remainder of the academic year, subject to university student conduct policies.

This approach seems to be a responsible way to tackle the issue, but there is a risk of it being over-applied if the conference starts penalizing typical college behavior, rather than just actions that go too far, like what we saw with the UCF versus BYU game.

The Knights’ home crowd will have a chance to redeem themselves next Friday when they face Baylor, while BYU will host Arizona State on Halloween. They probably won’t have to deal with similar issues during that matchup.
