Destruction of America’s Family Farms
America’s family farms face significant threats as monopolies increasingly dominate the food supply. This situation prompted Joe Maxwell from Farm Action Fund to introduce the bipartisan Rural Independence Initiative.
During a discussion with Blaze TV host Daniel Horowitz, Maxwell emphasized the importance of this initiative, mentioning a newly published paper that supports it. This initiative stands out as a pro-health food, pro-farmer, and pro-rural American political movement.
Maxwell explained that the goal is to support candidates who advocate for fair and free markets, healthy food, and economic independence away from monopoly power. He stated that, regardless of whether candidates are Democrats, Republicans, or independents, their primary mission is to champion these causes.
“Both parties seem to be failing the populace, aligning with a corporate oligarchy that dictates our economic landscape,” Maxwell asserted. He pointed out that this corporatization impacts everything from our diets to food production and ultimately government control.
Horowitz agreed, noting that the farm bill, traditionally passed with bipartisan support, often favors certain crops and resources, sometimes ones that aren’t even edible. “They profess to support rural and heartland America, but really, it appears that their interests align against us,” he added.
While Maxwell’s efforts focus on rural communities, he stressed that he isn’t asking for special privileges but rather a fair playing field. “Rural workers are typically earning around $24,000 less each year than their urban counterparts,” he noted, highlighting stark disparities. Additionally, he pointed out health concerns, such as higher infant mortality rates in rural areas compared to urban settings.
Maxwell emphasized the need for policies that truly reflect the needs of rural residents and various businesses — whether that means meatpackers, farmers, or light industry workers. “Restoring wealth and improving the quality of life for rural Americans can only happen if we dismantle corporate dominance in these sectors,” he concluded.
