As we know, this is the final year of the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament.
Next season, the Big Ten will welcome new members UCLA, Washington, Oregon and USC, expanding the conference’s participation to 18 teams. All 14 teams currently in the conference will participate in the tournament, but next season an expanded conference will expand the tournament field to 15 teams, with three schools watching from home along with the rest.
But that’s for another time.
Because right before our eyes, many teams are fighting for survival in the NCAA Tournament during conference championship week, and the Big Ten is no exception.Purdue, Illinois and Wisconsin are likely to be shut out of the Big Ten, with both states michigan Northwestern is pretty confident in their chances barring a disaster in the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans are currently checking in at No. 19. Ken Pomeroy’s Ranking (same as 24th place) net ranking) Meanwhile, the Wildcats sit 42nd in Pomeroy’s rankings and 50th in the NET rankings.
From there it gets a little more difficult. Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, Minnesota’s four teams are likely to be sitting in a bubble ahead of the tournament, which begins later today at Minnesota’s Target Center. Nebraska probably feels its chances the best — wins over Purdue and Michigan State will help them win — and the Cornhuskers are No. 32 in Pomeroy’s rankings and 37th in the NET rankings. It is located at the top. However, all four teams will be hoping to perform well this week and solidify their positions in the standings.
Finally, the first two games will be broadcast on Peacock for the first time in tournament history.
