Bill Barr refutes inappropriate connection between Trump and Epstein in recently disclosed House testimony

House Oversight Committee Releases Bill Barr’s Testimony Transcript

The House Oversight Committee has unveiled a 120-page transcript from Bill Barr’s deposition, which seems to support claims from Republicans. They argue that previous officials at the Department of Justice (DOJ) had no knowledge of any illicit links between former President Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein.

This comes despite statements from the committee’s leading Democrats last month, suggesting that the full transcript did not exonerate Trump from fraud allegations.

The committee has been looking into how the DOJ managed the Epstein case, calling various individuals and groups to testify. Barr mentioned that he had two discussions with Trump regarding Epstein.

House Takes Steps to Release Epstein Documents

During these inquiries, Barr rejected Trump’s claims about the DOJ’s approach to the Epstein investigation. According to a transcript, he asserted that no specific directives or national preferences influenced their actions.

In an exchange initiated by Rep. Jasmine Crockett from Texas, Barr struggled to remember if he had informed Trump about his name being in documents linked to Epstein.

Crockett pressed, asking, “Do you recall the conversation where you informed the President that he was in the Epstein Files?”

Barr responded, “I’m not exactly sure what the ‘Epstein file’ means today. However, I didn’t talk to him about it. I believe he was on Epstein’s plane, flying between Miami and New York or New Jersey.”

Oversight Committee Releases Extensive Epstein Documentation

Crockett followed up by asking if Barr had any specific knowledge of women claiming to have met Trump via Epstein.

“I wasn’t aware of any evidence backing that up,” Barr replied.

Later in the testimony, Barr suggested that if any compromising evidence about Trump existed, it would likely have been leaked, much like any potential evidence against former President Bill Clinton, who, like Trump, had past connections with Epstein.

“If there was something, I think it would surface. The Southern District of New York is known for its thoroughness,” Barr commented.

A legal counsel from the committee asked, “So, in your experience, if the SDNY prosecutor found evidence of wrongdoing, they would pursue it, potentially leading to charges?”

Barr acknowledged this expectation, suggesting the same scrutiny would apply to prominent figures.

“I assume they’d operate similarly for Clinton,” he said.

He continued, saying, “Even under President Biden, they were likely searching for anything against Trump, and this could have been a straightforward case if the evidence existed. But I wasn’t made aware of any such evidence.” A former Trump aide echoed this sentiment about the SDNY’s investigations.

Barr remarked, “From my perspective, if there’s concrete proof of a crime, they will chase it down.” His testimony ignited partisan disagreements, as Rep. Robert Garcia, a key Democrat in the committee, claimed Barr’s statements failed to absolve Trump of wrongdoing.

Garcia asserted, “During yesterday’s deposition, Attorney General Barr could not clear Trump of misconduct,” reflecting on the contents of the transcript. However, it seems to suggest Trump does not have a criminal association with Epstein, at least according to Barr’s memories.

Recalling his two discussions with Trump about Epstein, Barr noted, “One conversation arose after the news of Epstein’s suicide. I informed him that I planned to investigate it thoroughly.”

The transcript also indicates that current Attorney General Pam Bondy recently told Trump that his name appeared in the Epstein documentation—a standard operating procedure.

“Typically, when something like this arises, the Attorney General should notify the President,” Barr explained. “It’s routine to inform the chief executive if their name is about to come to light.”

Investigation and Controversies

Barr couldn’t remember numerous investigation specifics, but did express frustration over periods when authorities struggled to locate Ghislaine Maxwell, calling that “embarrassing.” In the midst of disputes regarding the DOJ’s actions from earlier this year, he dismissed conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s death.

When asked if he maintained his belief that Epstein committed suicide, Barr replied, “Absolutely.”
