Bill Belichick’s Confidence Amid Struggles
Bill Belichick remains optimistic about turning his team’s performance around. The North Carolina head coach addressed reporters after they implied that the team had improved since he affirmed his commitment to the program earlier this month. This comes after speculation that he was considering a buyout during a tough first season.
To assert his point, Belichick referenced a quote commonly attributed to President Donald Trump. “It was nothing else. Whoever that story came from, it’s already been deleted and everything else has been deleted,” he stated. “As President Trump says, this is just fake news. It’s just fiction. Look, our consistency has been here since the day Michael Lombardi and I came in and started hiring and joined the organization in December.”
He added, “We came in that day and we’ve continued to do it every day. And that’s what it’s going to be. I’m sure there are a lot of other people out there who want to get clicks and views and posts on ‘myface’ and stuff. It’s just a pile of garbage.”
However, Belichick cannot ignore the reality of his inaugural year as a college football head coach, which has been less than stellar. Currently, the Tar Heels hold a record of 2-5, with their victories coming against Charlotte and Richmond—teams that compete at the FCS level and have records of 1-7.
There’s also scrutiny surrounding Belichick’s connection with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, who, following a high-profile offseason, frequently appears on the sidelines. Things reached a low point for Belichick in early October, during the team’s bye week that led to rumors of internal discord. Both he and athletic director Bubba Cunningham were compelled to make statements to reaffirm their joint commitment.
Since that time, North Carolina has faced two tough losses in the ACC against California and Virginia. Most recently, the Tar Heels lost in overtime to the No. 16 Cavaliers, where a critical decision by Belichick to go for a two-point conversion in overtime proved unsuccessful when Ben Hall was stopped short of the goal line.
Belichick will seek his first ACC win on Friday night when North Carolina State comes to play against Syracuse.
