You might think that Bill Belichick has bigger issues to deal with than discussing the involvement of his 25-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, in his coaching role at the University of North Carolina—especially with the ongoing investigation into the Tar Heels’ football program. However, in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, the 74-year-old coach actually addressed it.
It’s hard for a legendary coach, particularly one of Belichick’s age, to start a relationship with someone significantly younger without raising eyebrows and generating speculation. This was particularly true soon after he joined UNC.
Belichick called the reactions to their relationship absurd, saying, “The way the story was picked up was a long way from that. Like, ‘She’s trying to be the general manager of the team,’ and it’s so ridiculous.”
In reality, Hudson was simply assisting him by helping to organize his schedule—nothing more. I mean, it’s not unusual for someone’s partner to lend a hand, especially when that person has a packed agenda.
“When I took the job here, it was December, and at that time I was doing five TV shows, a radio show, and had a book coming out,” he explained. “I had a lot of other things going on when I accepted the position.” He mentioned that an email he sent about having Hudson manage his personal appearances was unrelated to the university; it just involved her being copied on certain messages.
This led to misleading claims that Jordon was involved in everything he did or was copied on all emails, which Belichick labeled as “a flat-out lie.”
Moreover, he dismissed any suggestion that public records requests made by Hudson concerning communications between media and university staff regarding them indicated anything improper. He noted they were simply requests for information that had already been sent out.
To clarify, Hudson isn’t acting as the general manager or managing his daily tasks. She’s just occasionally copied in on a few emails and is involved with scheduling that doesn’t relate to UNC. In fact, she’s been quite discreet lately.
She only appeared publicly this season during the recent game when the Tar Heels achieved a 35-3 win over East Tennessee State, improving to 2-0. It almost seems, to someone like me who’s a bit of a hopeless romantic, that people are keen to see the relationship falter. It’s really sad, as it appears they just want to find happiness together.
