Bill Belichick's experience with UNC seems 'like it has come to an end': Paul Finebaum

Recent statements from Bill Belichick and North Carolina State athletic director Bubba Cunningham haven’t alleviated concerns surrounding Belichick’s new role at UNC.

Released in the wake of rumors, the statements come just five games into his coaching stint, where he’s led the team to a disappointing 2-3 record. Notably, he’s been seen on the sidelines alongside his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, which has raised eyebrows.

ESPN commentator Paul Finebaum is among those suggesting Belichick may be nearing the end of his college coaching journey. He expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the recent statements. “They felt quite hollow to me,” Finebaum stated on Thursday’s “Get Up.” He emphasized that if the intention was to convey a strong message, it should be more decisive rather than what he saw as meaningless declarations. Furthermore, he criticized Belichick for seemingly prioritizing personal time, referencing a recent week off during which he took a trip to Nantucket with Hudson.

Finebaum remarked, “It seems like he checked out. The team performance has reflected that. At this point, it might be wise for him to step away before things get any worse.” His comments highlighted Belichick’s recent lackluster coaching in light of the team’s struggles, particularly after their heavy loss to UCF prior to facing Clemson.

Finebaum and colleagues on “First Take” have been quite critical of Belichick this week, even branding his tenure as potentially the “worst in college football history.” They referred to the experiment at UNC as a “disastrous disaster.”

Additionally, reports suggest that Belichick has been exploring buyout options with the university’s administration and may initiate a $1 million buyout if he finds a suitable opportunity elsewhere. If UNC decides to terminate his contract, it would cost $20 million.

Adding to the controversy, multiple reports indicate rule violations under Belichick’s leadership. This week, cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins was suspended for allegedly providing special benefits to players, such as sideline passes for their families. One parent spoke out, describing the environment under Belichick as “toxic.”
