Bill Belichick, who has won eight Super Bowls, has always emphasized one core principle: avoid distractions. Yet, as he takes the helm at the University of North Carolina, this philosophy seems to be challenged.
Some observers have raised eyebrows over lawsuits, recent losses, and the presence of his 24-year-old girlfriend on the sidelines, who some say is drawing too much attention.
At 73, Belichick, often hailed as the best coach in NFL history, is now embroiled in a significant legal battle. This lawsuit claims that he was hired unlawfully behind closed doors by UNC and its board of trustees.
The suit was filed by a former UNC administrator, Chris Clemons, just days after the Tar Heels fell to a disappointing 2-2 record. This came on the heels of a staggering 34-9 defeat to Central Florida—an outcome many fans found embarrassing. Belichick’s girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, made headlines herself, as a pre-game clip showed her giving him a pep talk before that game.
Among students at UNC, the reaction has been mixed, with some insisting Belichick’s recent behavior doesn’t align with his reputation. Many were hoping he’d bring the same prowess he demonstrated with the New England Patriots.
“So far, it seems like he’s just added drama to the university,” one insider mentioned. “If things continue this way, a firing at season’s end wouldn’t be surprising.”
This source expressed concern that Hudson might be damaging Belichick’s legendary status. “She’s making him look bad. He doesn’t seem like the great coach he once was,” another insider chimed in.
There are additional complications; the lawsuit claims there were “emergency meetings” regarding Belichick’s hiring held discreetly by the university leadership, raising questions about transparency.
Despite the numerous allegations, UNC Board Chairman Malcolm Turner strongly refuted Clemons’ claims, calling them “unfortunate and inaccurate.” Both Belichick and Hudson have not commented on these developments.
Even before he officially kicked off his UNC tenure, there was chatter about his decision-making, particularly regarding his high-profile relationship with Hudson, a former cheerleader he met in 2021.
The timeline of their relationship is somewhat unclear. Although they began dating in 2023 following Belichick’s breakup with Linda Holliday, they didn’t go public until mid-2024.
Notably, Hudson has been a frequent presence at Belichick’s press events and even attended a Super Bowl date with him. After being seen together at the Miss Maine Pageant, she received more attention.
The pair’s public interactions haven’t gone unnoticed. During a CBS interview, Hudson unexpectedly cut off a question about how they met, which left many puzzled since they had previously discussed it openly.
Belichick’s daughter-in-law even took to social media to criticize Hudson’s behavior, suggesting it was unprofessional. According to insiders, Belichick’s circle is concerned about how much influence she seems to have over him.
Meanwhile, as Belichick tries to lead UNC, students are not pleased with his sidelined focus. One student expressed frustration at how the coach’s attention appears split, noting, “It’s worrying to see this when our program has invested so much in him.”
Additionally, UNC and Belichick are featured in an upcoming Hulu documentary series, raising further questions about Hudson’s role in all of it. Some students feel that the situation has dampened enthusiasm around the program.
“The atmosphere isn’t great,” said sophomore Jacob Evans. “With all the distractions, it feels less like a professional environment and more like a circus.”
