Former President Bill Clinton, who had backed former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the lead-up to the New York City mayoral primary, recently congratulated Zoran Mamdani after his clear victory in the primary. Clinton’s message expressed well-wishes for Mamdani’s future endeavors in the upcoming November election.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, emerged victorious over Cuomo and others in a series of ranked-choice contests. The unofficial results confirmed his success, with Cuomo famously stating, “I won,” during a prior discussion.
With Clinton’s support, Mamdani has gained traction among prominent figures, including U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren. Warren praised Mamdani’s grassroots campaign, emphasizing that it’s vital for the government to focus on affordable solutions for New Yorkers.
Mamdani himself acknowledged Warren’s backing, expressing gratitude and highlighting the importance of her leadership in advocating for working families. He stated that her support truly means a lot to him.
However, not everyone is on board with Mamdani’s candidacy. Some New York Democrats have described him as “too extreme to lead.” In a somewhat contrasting tone, President Donald Trump took to social media to label Mamdani “a 100% communist madman.”
