De Blasio’s Team Aligned with Mamdani’s Campaign

Former New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, often remembered for his controversial legacy, is making moves to connect with up-and-coming political figure Zoran Mamdani. Sources indicate that de Blasio and his former aides are seeking to carve out a role in Mamdani’s potential administration by offering their support.

De Blasio has become somewhat of a silent adviser to the Queens Congressman, as he actively backs Mamdani’s campaign. Patrick Gaspard, a notable former aide to de Blasio, has been instrumental in this effort, helping to navigate voter demographics and support millennial candidates after unexpected upsets in prior elections.

However, insiders suggest that the relationship isn’t as influential as de Blasio’s team hopes. There’s chatter that while they provide advice, it’s not shaping the campaign in any significant way. “They seem to be trying to make their input relevant, but it’s not clear how effective they are,” a source mentioned.

Gaspard has played a key role in securing Mamdani’s visibility, notably through his connections with political figures like Rev. Al Sharpton. His previous positions—ranging from US ambassador to South Africa to a prominent role in the Obama administration—give him access to crucial networks within New York’s African-American community and labor unions.

Meanwhile, Camille Rivera, another former adviser to de Blasio, is also making a pitch for influence. Several other political figures who faced electoral defeats are now rallying around Mamdani, attempting to find roles within his campaign.

Despite these efforts, some political veterans warn that reintroducing former de Blasio aides could undermine Mamdani’s vision for a revitalized New York City. Concerns about moving too quickly are prevalent. “There’s real potential for refreshing the city’s leadership, but relying on familiar faces from de Blasio’s past might hinder that,” one expert cautioned.

In a recent interview, de Blasio praised Mamdani, referring to him as “the best mayor of his life.” Yet this statement hasn’t prompted any commentary from Mamdani’s camp. On social media, both de Blasio and his partner Nomiki Const have voiced support for emerging leftist figures, expressing a desire for Mamdani to connect with everyday New Yorkers.

Const sharply criticized the candidacy of former governor Andrew Cuomo, labeling him as a poor choice for government, while emphasizing the importance of Mamdani’s approach. The underlying concern is how de Blasio’s former associates blend into Mamdani’s team ahead of a challenging election cycle that includes competition from Mayor Eric Adams and other GOP candidates.

“They seem overwhelmed,” one source stated. “It feels a lot like de Blasio’s camp once did.”

Adjustments within the campaign’s structure are also taking place, with a change in leadership in the communications team. This restructuring aims to better handle the influx of media interest following recent campaign developments.

Kathy Wylde, a significant figure in New York’s nonprofit scene, has also emerged as a supporter and is attempting to bridge connections between Mamdani’s campaign and the business community. Wylde noted that many in the business sector resonate with Mamdani’s criticism of income inequality, viewing his insights as increasingly relevant.
