Former mayor Bill de Blasio reached a resolution regarding his use of NYPD security during his unsuccessful presidential campaign.
He will pay nearly $330,000 to cover costs incurred by taxpayers after using police officers for “political purposes” on multiple occasions.
Last year, the Conflict of Interest Committee imposed a $155,000 fine on him for his actions over a four-month period while he tried to secure the Democratic presidential nomination.
The settlement, announced on Wednesday, required de Blasio to pay $100,000 upfront, which reduced his fine to $10,000. He is also set to continue payments of $14,000 every three months.
If he defaults, he would be liable for the entire amount of $475,000.
The COIB noted, “This settlement marks the successful conclusion of the first enforcement action initiated by the board.”
De Blasio commented, “Today I resolved a notable case at the NYC COIB. I acknowledge my mistake and have deep regrets. It’s time to move forward.”
