Bill Gates Cancels Keynote at AI Summit Amid Epstein Controversy

Bill Gates unexpectedly opted out of delivering a keynote speech at a significant AI summit in India on Thursday. This decision came in light of recently disclosed emails that highlighted his connection with Jeffrey Epstein.

The six-day event in New Delhi was celebrated as a pioneering forum in the Global South, offering India a chance to showcase its AI prowess to the world. However, attendees reported being hindered by traffic issues, awkward moments on stage—one of which went viral involving AI leaders Sam Altman and Dario Amodei—and general organizational turmoil.

The Gates Foundation explained that Gates withdrew his keynote to “maintain focus on the AI Summit’s key priorities,” despite earlier statements indicating that he was scheduled to participate.

Gates has faced considerable public backlash since the U.S. Department of Justice released updated emails from Epstein, which hinted that Epstein may have facilitated meetings for Gates. He expressed regret about knowing Epstein while denying any involvement in the financier’s unethical actions.

His cancellation occurred just days after Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang also stepped away from the AI Impact Summit, citing “unforeseen circumstances,” according to an Nvidia spokesperson.

Among the celebrities who did attend were OpenAI’s Altman and Anthropic’s Amodei. An uncomfortable moment was noted when they notably avoided holding hands during a staged photo opportunity.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present, joyfully raising the hands of both Altman and Alphabet’s CEO Sundar Pichai to celebrate the occasion. Interestingly, Altman skipped shaking hands with Amodei, maintaining a more reserved interaction, which led to some playful commentary online.

The rivalry between OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude has ramped up recently, especially following Anthropic’s Super Bowl ads that poked fun at ChatGPT’s advertising practices.

In a light-hearted response to the ads, Altman remarked on the irony of Anthropic’s tactics, suggesting that he didn’t expect such a promotional approach from them.

Modi’s presence aimed to highlight the launch of the New Delhi Frontier AI Commitment, which encapsulates a set of voluntary guidelines meant to guarantee the safe development of AI technologies. He emphasized the necessity of prioritizing child safety in AI platforms during his speech.

While the summit reportedly secured over $200 billion for India’s AI infrastructure, many participants voiced frustrations about the organizational chaos and lack of governmental planning.

In a baffling turn of events, the summit’s exhibit hall abruptly closed, upsetting businesses that had invested time in setting up their displays. Additionally, an Indian university was asked to exit after it was revealed that a robot dog showcased by an employee was not a locally made product but rather a commercially available unit from China.

Attendees also faced significant traffic issues as police blocked roads for VIPs, which made accessing taxis or shuttle services nearly impossible and left many walking for long distances in central Delhi.
