Bill Maher and John Leguizamo Discuss Immigration on Podcast
In a recent episode of the “Club Random” podcast, Bill Maher and actor John Leguizamo had a heated exchange about former President Donald Trump’s views on immigration.
Leguizamo criticized Stephen Miller, one of Trump’s top advisors, labeling him a racist and blaming him for extensive deportation policies. Maher responded, pointing out that the previous administration bears responsibility for current immigration issues.
“This is partly backlash from how Biden has handled the immigration situation. It can’t simply be a free-for-all,” Maher remarked.
Leguizamo responded by saying, “There’s plenty of space here. There’s no shortage of rooms in America,” expressing skepticism about Maher’s assertions.
Maher countered that the debate isn’t merely about physical space but also about resources. He mentioned research indicating that hundreds of millions worldwide wish to come to the U.S. and questioned why they aren’t already here.
During Trump’s first term, he faced significant backlash for his comments about countries like Haiti and El Salvador.
Leguizamo retorted, dismissing conditions in those countries as not a valid reason for their struggles. Maher insisted that international factors do motivate people to seek a better life in the U.S.
As an outspoken liberal, Leguizamo argued that U.S. policies often exacerbate issues in Latin America.
Reflecting on Trump’s demeanor, Leguizamo recalled meeting him before his presidency, describing him as “very meek.” Maher disagreed, suggesting that Trump has a knack for seeming charismatic, despite his ego-driven reputation.
Maher had previously met Trump and described him as “graceful and measured,” but he made it clear that he wouldn’t shy away from criticism in the future.
Leguizamo also mentioned Trump’s alleged dismissive remark about him, which Maher acknowledged as offensive.
Maher characterized Trump as a “product of his time,” to which Leguizamo agreed, advocating a deeper understanding of contemporary challenges.
Leguizamo is set to host an MSNBC program titled “Leguizamo Does America,” where he’ll explore various Latin communities and their cultures across the nation.
