Bill Maher called former President Donald Trump “the luckiest motherfucker” after he survived an assassination attempt on Saturday. He also “unequivocally” condemned the shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and said he was “glad” Trump was “safe.”
Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” made the statement on the concert stage of his comedy show just hours after the assassination attempt.
“When I saw the picture today with the blood coming out of his face, I don’t want to say the election is over, but…”

“There will be jokes because people hate him so much and want the opposite outcome,” Maher told the crowd. “I can’t do it.”
Indeed, Maher lamented, “Whoever the shooter was, he did a great deal of damage to the left. He lost a great deal of the moral high ground with his attitude of, ‘You are violent people.’ … Liberals don’t shoot people. Liberals don’t solve problems that way.”
Turning again to Trump, Maher said: “Let me just say this: You are the luckiest motherfucker that has ever walked the planet,” before the crowd erupted in laughter.
Maher again said he was “happy.” [Trump is] “OK,” he said, then noted that Trump was lucky to win the 2016 election because he “drew the inside straight” in the Electoral College despite “losing the popular vote by a large margin.” Maher added that Trump’s good fortune is also reflected in concerns about the “disarray of the Democratic Party” and Joe Biden’s candidacy for President. “Lucky, lucky, lucky all the time,” Maher said of Trump.
“When I saw the picture of him today with the blood streaming down his face, I don’t want to say the election is over, but…” Maher said, pausing to laugh with the crowd, before adding, “Yes, MAGA Nation finally got a perfect martyr. We all rejoiced when he went to jail. The arrest photo. I have to say he’s insane and he’s a criminal. But that arrest photo? It’s just perfect. It’s perfect.”
Maher also said Trump’s reaction to the shooting was “like it was rehearsed”, pumping his fist like the former president, and acknowledged the existence of “idiot conspiracy theorists who say, ‘Oh, they planned it.'”
“[Trump] “One gets scratched, another gets shot. Very Trump-like,” Maher said. “But it should work out well for him. I can already picture the memes: ‘The Man the Libertarians Couldn’t Kill’ and ‘Biden Can’t Survive a Debate, Bullets Can’t Stop Donald Trump.’ It almost doesn’t matter who the Democrats put up now.”
