Bill Maher Critiques Democratic Socialism

On Friday, HBO host Bill Maher expressed concerns about democratic socialism, suggesting it could harm the Democratic Party. He urged both voters and party officials to distance themselves from this ideology.

During his “New Rules” segment, Maher specifically targeted two notable figures associated with democratic socialism: New York’s Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

“Democrats have to understand that Zoran Mamdani is the future of the party. Although, it’s more of a future for the Republicans, I suppose,” Maher joked. “If you missed his victory speech in the mayoral race last week, don’t fret. You’ll see it plastered across attack ads for the next couple of years.”

Maher acknowledged that while Mamdani appears to be a decent person, he sounded alarms about the Democratic Party’s increasing inclination toward candidates who identify as democratic socialists. He mentioned advice from another “big winner” in a recent special election, cautioning against a leftward drift. “If the party doesn’t shift back to the center, we might disintegrate,” Maher recalled. “She was spot on, but they just didn’t heed her warning, as is usually the case, right?”

As divisions rise within the party between moderates and progressives, Maher pondered, “Who’s correct in this debate?”

“Surprisingly, you don’t need a coin toss. The numbers show it,” he argued. In 2024, he pointed out, thirteen Democrats won seats in districts that Trump also took, and they were all moderates. “It’s pretty straightforward. Every leftist think tank analyzed the 2024 results and concluded: pivot to the center.”

Maher criticized Vermont’s healthcare system as another rebuttal against democratic socialism.

“Democratic socialism is like an appealing dating profile. It all seems perfect until you actually meet them in person. Take Bernie Sanders as an example. He claims his major success is bringing single-payer healthcare to our massive population, but when Vermont attempted it for just over 600,000 people, it collapsed,” he asserted.

“Bernie, AOC, and Mamdani aren’t Democrats. They proudly identify as democratic socialists, which is a different ballgame. I’m not sure people fully grasp that yet,” Maher stated.

While admitting that programs like Social Security and Medicare fall under a socialist umbrella, he argued that figures within the Democratic Socialists of America are far more radical.

“Yes, it’s all socialism. And much of it is beneficial for softening capitalism’s harsher edges. But the DSA takes a more extreme stance, and radical economic policies are often linked with equally radical social policies,” he warned.

Maher criticized the left-leaning faction of the Democratic Party, but he did not spare Republicans either. He claimed that the public is “pleading with both sides” to “act normally and seek common ground.”

“It’s either defunding the police or extreme enforcement actions. It’s either MAGA-style capitalism or state-run grocery stores,” he lamented. “Honestly, I don’t want any of that. I just want a Democrat who can assure me that if I like Whole Foods, I can keep shopping there.”

Later on, Maher returned to discuss both political extremes, mocking Trump’s tough-guy persona as well as the peculiarities of leftist politics.

“You have to understand this. At this year’s DSA Convention, often called ‘Commie-Con,’ you had to present proof of a negative COVID-19 test just to join. In 2025! Yes, nobody wants to go through that again,” he asserted. “We’re exhausted from Trump’s bravado and the political circus.”

As of this moment, the offices of Sanders and Mamdani have not offered any comment, nor has the Democratic Socialists of America responded to requests for feedback.
