“Real Time” host Bill Maher was in a depressed mood Friday night following this week’s New York special election, claiming that Democrats have “successfully flipped immigration to the Republicans.”
Democrats are flipping the seat vacated by ousted Rep. George Santos (R.N.Y.), with former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi handily defeating Republican newcomer Maji Pilip in a closely contested race. He defeated it and won.
During the panel discussion, Maher viewed Suozzi’s victory amid the immigration battle on Capitol Hill as a sign that Democrats are on the winning side of the issue.

“The biggest political news this week is that Democrats have successfully flipped immigration on its head,” Maher began. “Immigration is the number one issue for voters right now, even more so than the economy. Things like this don’t happen very often. I think Chuck Schumer played them. And Mitch McConnell used to be this guy.” Playing with everyone, he was one step behind. He’s a little unwell.”
Maher went on to say that “Democrats bluffed” on the immigration bill following Republican protests over “invasions” at the border, but it ultimately fell through due to Republican opposition.

“I mean, you could read Lindsey Graham and other prominent Republicans saying, ‘You’ll never get a better bill than this,'” Maher said. “The Republicans — well, Trump didn’t want the Democrats to win, so they told them to vote against their bill. Now there’s a guy named Tom Suozzi? He’s running for an open seat. Santos, now in a cameo role, won elections in states and suburbs rocked by immigration.
“This is Tom Suozzi. He said, ‘What we need are strong, outspoken pro-Israel Democrats who will stand up to the far left for Israel.’ Hello, Tom Suozzi!” Maher exclaimed. “And he said, look, we have to close the border. He ran right! So if you’re a Democrat, I think this is very good news. To me, this puts them on a path to victory at the border.”That’s going to be the most important issue.”

Mr. Maher has repeatedly warned for years that immigration is an issue that hurts Democrats. In 2021, he called the border crisis an “Achilles heel” for liberals.
“This feels like the Democratic version of health care for Republicans. They don’t seem to be doing much about this issue and don’t really have a plan. It’s always their Achilles heel at election time,” Maher said. said this at the time.

Last fall, he called President Biden’s handling of the crisis a “disaster for the Democratic Party.”
“President Trump said today that he wants Biden to apologize because Biden appears to be adopting his policies, which is not good for Democrats,” Maher said in October. “They also look like sanctuary city hypocrites. They said, ‘Look, we’re caring people. Everyone should get their shot here.’ When they started transmitting, this meant quoting liberal New York Mayor Eric Adams, “This problem will destroy our city.”
Furthermore, “The governor [Kathy Hochul], “If you’re going to leave the country, go somewhere else.” “Keep walking” from the governor of New York? They’re putting out flyers in New York City right now saying, “New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world.” You should go to a cheaper city.’… I understand there’s a bit of an ‘I told you so’ at the border. ”
