Bill Maher Discusses J.D. Vance’s Comments on Western Civilization
In a recent episode of “Real Time,” comedian Bill Maher brought up remarks made by Vice President J.D. Vance during his visit to Hungary. Maher highlighted Vance’s assertion that Western civilization is real and deserving of defense.
“Vance stated, ‘We stand with you for Western civilization,'” Maher noted, referring to the vice president’s comments that positioned the Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, as a protector of Western values.
While conversing with Paul Riekoff, founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, and author Douglas Murray, Maher acknowledged that Orbán has perhaps “gone too far” in some actions, yet he affirmed a belief in the existence of Western civilization. “After 9/11, saying ‘clash of civilizations’ was suddenly off-limits,” he mentioned, indicating how reactions to that phrase have evolved.
“There really was a clash of civilizations,” Maher asserted, claiming that differing cultures have distinct values, with his being superior. The audience responded with applause, and Maher followed up, noting, “If you don’t agree, just try spending a week in an Islamic capital—especially as a woman.” The humor in his delivery seemed effective in making his point resonate.
Mr. Maher’s commentary primarily addressed Mr. Vance’s efforts to support Orbán as Hungary approaches elections on Sunday. Orbán, a long-time ally of President Trump, currently trails in polling, raising concerns about his return to power.
Throughout the discussion, Maher critiqued Orbán’s connections with Russia, expressing confusion at the idea of both Russia and the U.S. backing the same candidate while questioning the implications of such endorsements.
Murray, on the other hand, brought attention to some positive measures Orbán has taken, like restricting mass migration at Hungary’s borders, which has garnered approval from other EU nations. Still, he too expressed unease about Hungary’s ties to Russia, attributing it to the country’s reliance on Russian energy resources.
