Bill Maher’s Critique of the Democratic Party

Comedian Bill Maher has voiced his concerns about the Democratic Party’s ongoing shift to the left, suggesting that he might consider voting Republican in the 2028 presidential election.

During a conversation with ABC News’ Jonathan Karl, Maher discussed winning the Mark Twain Award for Humor and mentioned he might support Vice President J.D. Vance. “Yes, my vote counts,” he stated, clarifying, “I don’t live in communist America.”

Although he maintains some criticism of Republicans, Maher feels that certain Democrats have moved too far left for his liking. His critique began when Karl inquired about the reluctance of Democrats to appear on his show.

“Democrats are cowards. They’re cowards,” Maher remarked. He elaborated, explaining that daily news presents increasingly radical figures within the party. He noted, “For about a decade, it felt good because we were losing fans but weren’t going to align with these extreme left individuals either.” He believes he hasn’t altered his views but rather noticed a shift in priorities among people, which often revolves around tribalism.

He expressed discomfort with certain positions among Democratic candidates, particularly those who show support for militant groups and criticize Israel. Maher shared, “You said you were open to J.D. Vance, your vote is up for grabs,” to which he affirmed, “Yes, my vote stands because President Trump will never run.”

He conveyed optimism about the Democrats’ prospects in the coming midterm elections but holds reservations about their direction by 2028. He sees the push from American Democratic Socialists adopting policies he describes as communist as troubling.

“2028 is a different story,” he warned, projecting that this new faction within the party will gain momentum and won’t remain a minority.

When asked if he could support J.D. Vance, Maher replied directly, “Yes. If this represents the Democratic side, then yes.”

Amid these discussions, establishment Democrats are raising alarms about the influence of extremists following the victories of several Democratic Socialist candidates in recent primaries. Vance is viewed as a leading contender for the 2028 Republican nomination. However, some analysts argue that challenges tied to U.S.-Iran relations and partisan disagreements over Israel could complicate his path to the presidency.
