Bill Maher refers to universities as 'indoctrination centers' on Real Time

Bill Maher Critiques American Universities as “Indoctrination Factories”

Bill Maher has taken aim at elite American universities, dubbing them “indoctrination factories” and showing support for President Donald Trump’s initiatives. He emphasized, during a recent broadcast, the necessity of “hot poker” discussions regarding these issues.

“Academia has been, well, out of control for quite some time. It’s like these schools have become echo chambers with no diversity of thought,” Maher stated, reacting to queries about Trump’s proposed reforms in higher education.

Trump has been actively opposing major universities over issues like anti-Semitism and the absence of varied perspectives. His strategy includes threatening to withhold billions in federal research funds from prominent institutions like Columbia, Harvard, and Yale.

In the wake of the Hamas attacks on October 7, reports indicate a sharp rise in anti-Semitic incidents at universities nationwide. Additionally, studies show a significant drop in intellectual diversity, with liberal viewpoints dominating over conservative ones.

Harvard has engaged in negotiations with the Trump administration, settling over $221 million to restore research funding after various civil rights investigations. This agreement includes funds to address complaints related to anti-Semitism, which the Trump administration has deemed a landmark resolution. Columbia has also committed to enacting reforms aimed at combating discrimination and anti-Semitism on campus.

While Maher acknowledged that withholding research funds might not be the ideal response, he maintained that universities have strayed from American values. He pointed out instances where professors seemed morally detached, especially in light of reactions to the recent attacks.

“Why do you think so many cheered for what happened on October 7? Why did they describe that as exhilarating?” Maher posed, suggesting that such reactions point to a deep-seated anti-American sentiment.

In another instance, Cornell University’s Professor Russell J. Rickford referred to Hamas’ attacks as “exhilarating,” before later apologizing for his remarks.

Maher continues to criticize the universities for stifling free speech, claiming that conservative viewpoints are often silenced. “It’s essentially a one-sided narrative that prevails,” he remarked.
