With age, naturally, comes at least a little wisdom.
And at 68, Bill Maher, who has charmed audiences for decades as a politically well-rounded and funny guy, has plenty of that.
“There’s definitely been a lot of mistakes along the way, but that’s life,” Maher told Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report, who asked him if he had any regrets.
Not surprisingly, he says, “Too few to count.”
“I think life is a game in general where if you win, you’re lucky. And when you win, you don’t win 11-2. You win 7-5. And that’s it,” Maher explained, adding, “I think I won 7-5.”
“What makes you think it’s 7 to 5? I don’t think he has any regrets when he talks about not having a wife or kids before,” Rubin says.
“Not at all. That was one of the big wins,” Maher says gleefully. “I’m not kidding. First of all, it’s really hard for a successful guy to be single. Really hard. Even for an unsuccessful guy,” he laughs.
“I never wanted kids and I was always stuck on that idea,” he added.
But there’s one thing I wish I’d known when I was younger.
“I recently came across a photo of myself when I was 28, and I realised that in my 20s and 30s, if I wasn’t appealing to women, I would think, ‘Oh, I have this amazing personality, but I just don’t have the looks,'” Maher says.
“Then I looked at the pictures and realised the exact opposite was true – I was beautiful enough. I was just so insecure and unsure of myself. It was the exact opposite of what I thought,” he continued, adding, “If I had known then, I would have been a lot happier and a lot less upset and hurt.”
