Bill Maher Considers Voting Republican If Changes Occur

In a recent conversation with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, comedian Bill Maher expressed that he might contemplate a vote for the Republican Party, but only if they undergo significant transformations. Maher, who has been critical of Donald Trump and generally aligned with the Democratic Party, said, “Of course” he could consider voting Republican, but emphasized that the party must abandon its stance on not conceding elections.

He articulated concerns about the GOP’s fear of leftist policies, suggesting this fear leads them to act in ways that compromise democratic values. “They seem to believe that the left’s actions are excessively counter-intuitive. And while there might be some truth to that, it feels fundamentally wrong that they resist conceding power. It seems like, to them, preserving their hold is more critical than democracy itself,” Maher noted.

Maher questioned whether the Republican Party would continue to maintain their opposition to an outsider taking the reins after Trump. He remarked, “Will they still think they can’t let these people be in power? They perceive them as lacking common sense, trying to initiate change in a country that prefers stability. This revolution they fear isn’t what people want; they just want politicians to, well, do their jobs.” These thoughts reflect his underlying worries about the political climate.

He expressed a sort of cautious optimism about a potential “return to normalcy” after Trump’s presidency. However, he admitted the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s future actions, especially given discussions about a possible third term, which he deemed outside the constitutional realm. “I hope for a return to normalcy. But, as we know, Trump isn’t one to follow norms easily. It would be nice if figures like J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio returned to earlier stances, but who actually knows?” he added.

Maher did not shy away from critiquing both political sides during the interview, asking, “Why can’t we both be normal?” He highlighted areas where he believes Trump was correct, such as issues regarding border control and NATO funding. “He showed he could manage border closures without needing Congressional support. But there’s a line, and he crossed it. People react badly to seeing disputes in stores, especially with individuals who’ve lived here for a long time,” he stated.
