Bill Nye holds the fossil fuel industry and Congress responsible for the deadly flooding in Texas.

On Wednesday, Bill Nye discussed how the negligence of fossil fuel companies and the US Congress regarding climate issues has significantly contributed to the recent catastrophic floods in central Texas. In a segment on CNN’s “Inside Politics,” Nye pointed out that weather patterns, including the increasing occurrence of storms that were once deemed rare, are a strong indicator of climate change.

He posed the question, “So what are we going to do about it?” suggesting that ceasing the burning of fossil fuels is essential. The floods in central Texas last week tragically claimed over 100 lives, including children and counselors at a summer camp. The National Weather Service (NWS) had issued multiple flash flood warnings and emergency alerts throughout the situation.

Critics, particularly from the Democratic side, have blamed budget cuts under former President Trump for leaving the NWS unprepared for such disasters. Some liberal commentators, however, have cautioned against politicizing the issue, arguing that the funding cuts were not the primary cause of the tragedy.

Nye expressed concern that the government’s complacency, influenced by fossil fuel interests, has overlooked the pressing reality of climate change. He remarked, “The fossil fuel industry has effectively convinced Congress that it’s not happening.” During the interview, he emphasized that while it’s challenging to link a single weather event directly to climate change, the overall trends, especially in extreme weather, are closely tied to it.

He mentioned the existence of a warning system available to alert communities about environmental disasters but stressed the fundamental need for the US to treat climate change with the seriousness it warrants. Bash, the host, referenced the Trump administration’s approach to fossil fuel production, which some believe exacerbated the climate situation. Nye acknowledged this perspective and urged for a change in direction, stating, “The opportunity still exists, but we need to turn things around.”
