Bill Simmons believes the Spurs' trade for Kevin Durant is already settled.

Is Kevin Durant’s Next Destination Already Decided?

Bill Simmons suggests that Kevin Durant’s move might already be finalized. On his podcast, he commented, “I wouldn’t be surprised if KD to the Spurs is already over and they haven’t announced it. As they agreed to the details, they just announce it in draft week.”

Simmons, while admitting he lacks insider information, pointed out that Durant and the Suns have been collaborating on finding a suitable team for next season. The Spurs are also rumored to be targeting Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, with Durant entering the last year of his contract at 37, he might come at a lower cost for the Spurs.

He also mentioned, “It goes back to Giannis. I think they’re just going to trade it for KD. The cost is pretty low. They’re really competitive and they can do a few rounds in the playoffs, but they can keep the number two pick and do that.”

In terms of trade assets, aside from the notable Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs have a couple of promising players, notably Stefon Castle, who could potentially become a Rookie of the Year candidate for the 2024-25 season.

San Antonio also holds the 14th pick along with various young talents. Trading for Antetokounmpo might mean losing most assets besides Wembanyama, whereas acquiring Durant could involve a combination of players like Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and that 14th pick.

Durant’s contract for the upcoming season is around $55 million. Given his age, there’s uncertainty about a re-sign, but a trade involving Vassell, Johnson, or the 14th pick might be quite advantageous.

Interestingly, Durant hails from Washington, D.C., and played college basketball in Texas, making a move to San Antonio somewhat nostalgic.

If the Spurs are indeed aiming to secure Durant, he would align with a strong core that includes Wembanyama, Castle, Daron Fox, and potentially others like Harper. Other teams such as the Rockets and Timberwolves are also vying for Durant’s attention.
