Bill to officially change the name to ‘Gulf of America’ moves forward for a full House vote

Gulf of America Name Change Advances in House

A Republican-led House panel took significant steps on Monday toward permanently renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

The House Rules Committee approved the “Gulf Bay Act,” introduced by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), with a party-line vote. This act is set for a vote by the full House later this week.

The legislation formalizes President Trump’s earlier executive order that changed the name and mandates federal agencies update their documents and maps to reflect this new designation.

“Despite claims that we’re wasting time, the reality is we are advancing laws that safeguard America’s interests,” stated House Rules Committee Chairman Virginia Fox (R-NC) during her opening remarks at the hearing. “This law acknowledges the strategic significance America has in this region. We’re pushing for recognition of the Bay, which comes with economic, cultural, and commercial opportunities,” Fox added.

Legislators emphasized that Democrats opposing the name change were unable to provide any solid data to support their stance.

“It just makes sense to align government records with the reality of being connected to the US Gulf,” Fox noted. “We shouldn’t let political sentiments tied to the Trump administration interfere with sound public policy decisions.” She stressed the importance of supporting and institutionalizing this decision under congressional authority.

Democrats attempted to introduce multiple amendments aimed at blocking the bill, such as those curtailing permits for oil and gas drilling along the Gulf Coast, but none were successful.

A White House spokesperson sharply criticized the opposition, claiming, “They always put America last because Democrats are consumed with obstructing the president’s agenda.” The spokesperson reiterated that, as Trump has stated, the Gulf is a vital asset to the nation.

“Future generations should recognize this remarkable body of water as a symbol of American greatness,” the spokesperson said.

Representative Mary Gay Scanlon (D-Pa.) expressed her disapproval during the hearing, claiming that Republicans are “searching for increasingly embarrassing ways to praise the president and indulge in their obsessions.” She labeled the effort to rename the Gulf as a “stupid, pointless waste of time and taxpayer money,” criticizing the decision to bring it to the floor for a vote.

Shortly after taking office, Trump had signed an executive order regarding the Gulf, a region that spans five states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, known for its offshore oil production.

“The Gulf remains crucial in shaping America’s future and the global economy. It’s essential to recognize this thriving economic resource and its significance to our nation and its people,” Trump stated in his directive on January 20.
