Billionaire Laurene Powell Jobs Supporting High-Profile Film on Climate Change

Hollywood Stars Join Billionaire Activist for Climate Film

A notable cast of Hollywood celebrities is coming together with left-wing activist and billionaire Laurene Powell Jobs for a film focused on climate change. This project, described as a “dark comic drama” about global warming, features actors like Paul Rudd, Evan Peters, Amy Ryan, Paul Giamatti, John Turturro, Tatiana Maslany, and Jason Clarke. It is being produced by Sony Pictures Classics and directed by Tom McCarthy.

The film draws inspiration from Nathaniel Rich’s book, Lose the Earth, which depicts a true story set in 1980 at a Florida seaside resort where 20 experts meet for a weekend conference. Their goal is to address the growing concerns regarding CO2 emissions and their impact on climate change. Congress gives them a straightforward task: craft a statement on what action to take. However, this proves to be more complicated than expected.

The executive producer list is lengthy, including notable names like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Alex Gibney, alongside many others such as Billy James Parrott and Laurene Powell Jobs herself.

Published in 2019, Rich’s book contends that scientists had been warning about climate change long before 1980, but their concerns were largely ignored by politicians. While the narrative highlights the challenges posed by climate change denial, some activists found fault with the book for not being critical enough towards the fossil fuel industry.

Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, has emerged as a significant figure behind a wide network of left-leaning media, organizations, and political movements. In 2021, Alex Marlowe, editor-in-chief of Breitbart, examined Jobs’ increasing influence in his book, Breaking News: Exposing hidden dealings and secret corruption in the establishment media. Marlowe highlighted her financial backing of left-wing causes through her charity, Emerson Collective, which operates in a unique manner as a “hybrid philanthropy and investment company.”

He noted that this structure allows it to operate like a private corporation, which helps avoid IRS transparency rules and enables more active participation in political affairs. According to Marlowe, this could contribute to a lack of coverage regarding Jobs’ extensive connections to various media outlets that align ideologically or financially with her interests.
