Upstart Rick Jackson Defeats Brian Kemp-Backed Jones in Georgia Gubernatorial Race
In a surprising turn of events, billionaire Rick Jackson emerged victorious in Georgia’s gubernatorial runoff against Governor Brian Kemp and Lieutenant Governor Bert Jones, who had received support from former President Trump.
As reported by the Associated Press at 9:45 p.m. ET, Jackson garnered 53% of the vote, while Jones secured 47%.
This win is notable, as it marks one of the few defeats for Trump, who has largely dominated Republican primaries this election cycle. Just two weeks prior, Trump faced his first major setback when his chosen candidate, Randy Feenstra, lost to Zach Rahn in Iowa.
While Trump has seen success in defeating incumbents like Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, he faced a unique challenge in Georgia, where he and Kemp both supported different candidates in the ongoing Senate race. Despite backing Rep. Mike Collins, who eventually won, the political landscape remains complicated.
Jackson’s campaign reportedly spent an impressive $107 million on the primary, which is quite a sum for a gubernatorial race. Interestingly, he opted out of a scheduled debate with Jones, which might have given Jones an avenue to publicly challenge him.
In the primary race, Jackson initially had the upper hand but saw Jones rise to the top, finishing first and earning a place in the runoff. Jackson will now face Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms in November as he seeks to maintain Republican control in Georgia.
It’s also worth noting that Jones received a last-minute endorsement from Kemp, despite the governor’s earlier commitment to neutrality. Kemp praised Jones’s work, highlighting his efforts to return over $9 billion to taxpayers and his role in passing significant tort reform.
In a campaign marked by pointed accusations, Jones attempted to corner Jackson on various issues, including past legal settlements and campaign contributions. He raised questions about Jackson’s business practices and his failure to vet employees’ citizenship status, which had been reported previously.
Amidst all this, approximately $30 million of Jackson’s personal wealth, primarily from his health care executive background, was funneled into his campaign efforts.
The political drama continues, especially for the Senate race, where voters will ultimately decide which Republican candidate will challenge Senator Jon Ossoff come November.
Trump lauded Jones as a “warrior” and a “successful businessman,” emphasizing his credentials in a post on Truth Social, which reflects the complex dynamics playing out in Georgia politics.
