Billionaire Stephen Ross supports $200 aerial taxi trips to escape Miami traffic issues

Flying Taxi Service Backed by Dolphins Owner

A billionaire real estate magnate and owner of the Miami Dolphins is supporting a flying taxi venture, allowing passengers to travel from Miami to West Palm Beach, Florida, for about $200 within 30 minutes.

Stephen Ross has invested in Archer Aviation, which is developing an electric vehicle that can take off and land vertically, known as an eVTOL. The plan includes routes from his private golf course in Hobe Bay to Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Initial flights may start next year, with Archer also aiming to service local airports, like those in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach.

Adam Goldstein, Archer’s founder and CEO, noted that the rapidly growing population of South Florida makes it a prime location for these eVTOL flights, stating, “We believe South Florida is one of the best places in the country to do this.”

The company has already performed test flights in San Jose, California, and plans to expand its air taxi network to cities such as Abu Dhabi, New York City, and Los Angeles.

Ross emphasized that these flights would significantly reduce commute times for residents in his commercial and residential developments in West Palm Beach. He explained, “As an area becomes more popular, so does the congestion. The value of people’s time, that’s what really matters.”

Archer’s leading aircraft, the Midnight, is noted for its quiet operation compared to helicopters. Designed for short journeys of 20 to 50 miles, it can reach speeds of up to 150 mph while carrying over 1,000 pounds.

Archer aims to utilize its technology in urban areas struggling with traffic congestion, with the potential to shrink travel times to just 10 to 20 minutes, in contrast to over an hour stuck in cars.

South Florida’s population has surged recently, primarily due to strong international migration that outweighs domestic departures, making it one of the fastest-growing regions in the U.S.

Both Miami-Dade and Broward counties have shown stable population growth from 2023 to 2024, contributing to this trend. Florida itself has seen over an 8% increase in its total population, which highlights the broader growth that could benefit South Florida.

However, this rapid growth brings with it challenges like increased highway congestion and longer wait times for commuters. The U.S. Department of Transportation identifies severe traffic congestion between Miami and Palm Beach, with major highways seeing over 200,000 vehicles daily.

In Miami-Dade, peak-hour traffic causes delays that can more than double typical travel times, adding urgency to the need for alternative transportation solutions. This all makes the flying taxi service seem not just innovative but quite necessary as well.
