Buffalo Bills Part Ways with Sean McDermott
It was a significant change for the Buffalo Bills as they decided to let go of head coach Sean McDermott following a tough loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round. This decision came on Monday, highlighting the immediate impact of that heartbreaking game.
Owner Terry Pegula indicated that the defeat heavily influenced his decision to terminate McDermott’s contract. “The outcome of that game in Denver was pivotal,” Pegula mentioned during a press conference alongside general manager Brandon Beane.
He recalled a moment where he saw quarterback Josh Allen visibly upset, stating, “I looked around and saw the players’ faces. It was clear the team was affected.” He elaborated on how McDermott’s leadership didn’t seem to break the recurring cycle of playoff struggles.
Pegula clarified that McDermott’s firing was not merely based on a questionable call by officials, stating, “It was more about the pattern of our playoff performance.” He acknowledged that Allen had no involvement in the decision-making process regarding McDermott’s exit, emphasizing the confidentiality of their discussion afterward.
The owner also touched on the team’s performance, particularly regarding issues in their receiving corps, attributing some blame to coaching decisions during drafts, especially regarding player Keon Coleman. “Brandon did draft him, but there was pressure to go with that choice from the coaching staff,” Pegula explained, adding some context to the internal dynamics at play.
McDermott had a notable tenure, joining the team before the 2017 season. Under his guidance, the Bills reached the playoffs in eight out of his nine seasons, even making it to the conference title game on two occasions without making it to the Super Bowl.
This year, many had high hopes for the Bills, believing they had a real shot at the title, especially with other top competitors missing. Yet, the harsh reality remained: they face another season without the ultimate victory.
