Billy Bob Thornton Discusses How Hollywood Treats Taylor Sheridan

Taylor Sheridan’s Journey Beyond Hollywood

According to actor Billy Bob Thornton, much of Taylor Sheridan’s success in the entertainment industry can be attributed less to Hollywood itself and more to his determination and resilience.

Though Sheridan gained recognition for his role in “Sons of Anarchy,” he faced the harsh reality of his career’s instability. In a conversation with Town & Country, he shared how fleeting fame can be and how, despite his achievements, financial security eluded him. “I was homeless twice,” he revealed, shedding light on the struggles he encountered.

Thornton commented on Sheridan’s experience, stating, “Hollywood wasn’t nice to Taylor.” He elaborated that such treatment prompted Sheridan to find a path outside the traditional confines of the industry. “There’s something about being an outsider that drives you,” he added.

Sheridan opened up about the difficult periods in his life leading up to major changes. He opted for a more genuine rural lifestyle, stepping away from the Hollywood scene. “I lived in my car. Sometimes I’d go to Ojai, just somewhere where I could safely sleep. I did that for six months,” he recalled, emphasizing the lengths he went to in pursuit of his dreams.

Taking ownership of his choices, Sheridan decided to continue working in the entertainment world on his own terms. He said, “I could have decided at any point, ‘I’m going to go get a full-time job and I’m going to give up this dream,’ ” but ultimately, he chose to endure hardships rather than abandon his aspirations.

Making a shift from acting to directing and producing, Sheridan also pursued his passion for ranch life. He noted a turning point came when he wrote the screenplay for “Hell or High Water.” “When I sold that first screenplay, I bought a little house on an acre on a river in Wyoming,” he mentioned, reflecting on how that success changed his life.

After settling in Wyoming, he gradually expanded his property, acquiring more land and horses as his career flourished. Sheridan now boasts a significant real estate portfolio in Texas and has a steadfast aversion to debt, saying, “I’m still so averse to having to ever owe anybody anything.”

Thornton emphasized that Sheridan’s authenticity is a testament to his achievements. “I think the ranch community in Texas accepted Taylor 100 percent because he’s not phoning it in,” he mentioned, adding that Sheridan’s commitment to his lifestyle is genuine and not merely for show.

These days, Sheridan resides primarily on his ranch, dedicating his time to caring for horses and engaging in the demanding work that life on a ranch entails. His Hollywood career and the projects he’s involved in—like “Yellowstone,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” and “The Madison”—reflect his genuine lifestyle and passions.
