Billy Horschel steals the show at British Open, surges to top of the leaderboard in harsh conditions

Heavy rain and wind could not slow American golfer Billy Horschel down, as he led by one stroke. British Open He shot a 2-under 69 in Saturday’s final at Royal Troon.

“I’ve worked my whole life to be in this position,” Horschel said after his round.

“I’ve been in the lead going into the final round so many times before. Of course, this is a major so it has a special meaning. We all know that. I know what this means to everybody. I know what it means for my legacy in golf and what I want to do and what I want to accomplish, but I’m excited to be here.”

“I’ve wanted to be here my whole life,” he added. “I’m finally here and I’m happy about it.”

This is Horschel’s first time leading through 54 holes in a major tournament. He’s only dealt with the pressure of a major Sunday once before. 2013 US Open At Merion, he started tied for fourth place, two strokes behind.

But not everyone was up to the challenge in the tough conditions. Shane Lowry, who began the day at the top of the leaderboard, faltered on the back nine to finish with a six-over 77.

“I’m definitely going to go out there tomorrow thinking I can win the tournament,” Lawrie said after his round, “but it’s hard right now. Ten minutes ago I should have made a putt for par on the 18th green, and now I’m sitting here talking to you guys, trying to wrap my head around how I shot 77.”

Lawrie double-bogeyed the eighth hole and played the final 11 holes in seven over par, then made a final bogey on the 18th hole to fall back to three strokes behind.

An early tee time before the rain and wind picked up allowed Thriston Lawrence and Sam Burns to make the most of the first nine holes and they are tied for second heading into the final day.
