Billy Joel comforts fans by saying he's 'okay' despite NPH brain condition

Billy Joel Steps Back from Music Following Health Concerns

Billy Joel is taking a break from the music scene as he navigates health issues stemming from a recent diagnosis. The 76-year-old singer, known for hits like “Uptown Girl,” revealed in May that he has been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). This condition can impact vision, hearing, and balance.

Despite describing the situation as “terrifying,” Joel is doing his best to manage his health. He admitted to feeling like a “homewrecker” at times, reflecting on how the diagnosis has affected him personally. In a candid discussion, he noted that it’s a relief to share his experience with fans.

“I know a lot of people are worried about me and my health,” Joel reassured. “But I’m fine. What I have is something that, well, not many understand, including me.” He acknowledged the diagnosis felt invasive but emphasized that he’s not overly concerned about his wellbeing.

“It was scary, but it’s fine,” he added. “Just don’t worry about me dying or anything.” His wife, Alexis, remains hopeful as he continues to confront his challenges.

During an appearance on the “Club Random” podcast with Bill Maher, Joel shared how the diagnosis has particularly impacted his balance. “It’s like being on a boat,” he joked, highlighting the doctors’ uncertainty around the causes of NPH and admitting it felt better to avoid labels like “brain disorder.”

Joel canceled his tour dates earlier this year in light of his surgery and to engage in physical therapy. NPH, which often only affects older adults, is characterized by the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull, usually requiring surgical intervention to manage.

The musician tied the knot with Alexis Roderick in a surprise wedding on July 4, 2015, and they have two daughters together.
