Billy Joel Cancels Upcoming Tour Dates Due to Health Issues
In a surprising announcement, 76-year-old Billy Joel has canceled his upcoming tour dates after a recent medical check-up. The beloved singer, hailing from the Bronx, shared the news on social media, revealing that he has been diagnosed with “normal pressure hydrocephalus,” a condition resulting from the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain.
This can lead to pressure on brain tissues and might affect cognitive function, which can be pretty serious.
In an Instagram post, Joel explained that his symptoms have become more pronounced after a recent concert, causing issues related to his hearing, vision, and balance. Following advice from his doctors, he will be taking a break from performances to focus on recovery, which includes a specialized physical therapy program.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a rare disorder affecting a small percentage of seniors, approximately 0.2% of individuals aged 70-80 and around 6% of those over 80. It occurs when CSF isn’t correctly absorbed or circulated, leading to increased intracranial pressure. If ignored, the condition could result in permanent brain damage.
Symptoms often mimic those found in dementia, such as problems with gait, memory loss, mood changes, and even urinary incontinence. However, it’s noteworthy that NPH can be treated effectively, meaning this doesn’t necessarily spell the end of Joel’s performing career.
His team reassured fans that Joel is prioritizing his health and is thankful for the quality care he’s receiving. He’s also expressed gratitude for the support from his fans during this challenging time and looks forward to returning to the stage.
“We are so sorry for letting our audience down and thank you for understanding,” Joel stated.
Ticketholders for the canceled shows in locations like New York, New Orleans, Toronto, Santa Clara, Salt Lake City, Washington, DC, and Liverpool will receive refunds.
