Billy Joel Sells Motorcycles, Uncertain About Future Performances Due to Health Issues

Renowned singer Billy Joel is currently facing a challenging health situation that has him pondering the possibility of never stepping on stage again.

Recently, he disclosed that he has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, often referred to as water on the brain. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on October 15, he mentioned that this condition has compelled him to alter his lifestyle and approach to his career significantly.

When questioned about his future performances, Joel noted, “I have to take a series of tests before I know.”

“I can’t drive right now. I’m not allowed to drive,” he explained during the conversation.

Doctors have recommended that he refrain from live performances for the time being.

“What the neurologist told me, every time you do a show, it’s like you’re getting a concussion,” Joel said, highlighting the challenges posed by the loud volumes, intense lighting, and high energy demands of his concerts.

Further assessments will determine if he can resume live shows in the future, he remarked.

Joel’s health issues have shifted his outlook on his personal life too.

He shared that he is auctioning more than 70 motorcycles from his collection, a decision that did not come easily.

“I was not a collector. I was actually a rider,” he revealed.

“I realized I can’t ride as much as I used to. I don’t want to die like a bug on a windshield. So I thought I’d put a lot of them on auction.”

He described his condition as making “driving a little bit iffy.”

According to him, the ailment affects balance, memory, vision, and hearing.

“So I realized it’s time for me to turn it over to somebody else,” he stated.

Despite these challenges, he assured fans, “But I’m OK. They call it a brain disorder, but it’s not that serious. It’s just something that affects your balance.”

His motorcycle collection will be auctioned without reserve on November 20-21 at the Gooding Christie’s Rétromobile New York auction held at the Javits Center.
