Billy Joel’s Ex-Wife Defends Him Amid Marriage Collapse Claims
Elizabeth Weber, Billy Joel’s first wife, is speaking out, insisting that the singer shouldn’t bear the blame for the end of their marriage, which occurred alongside his friendship with bandmate, John Small. In her recent comments, Weber shared her perspective, indicating that she never saw Joel as the type to wreck a home. “I didn’t think of Bill as a homewrecker,” she mentioned, pointing to the complexities of their situation.
In the new documentary titled “Billy Joel: And That Goes,” Joel opened up about the emotional turmoil he faced when he revealed his feelings for Weber to Small. Their history stretches back to the 1960s, and they eventually married in 1973, though their union ended in divorce in 1982. The documentary highlights the impact of these events on Joel’s mental health, even leading him to experience depression and, sadly, two failed suicide attempts.
Reflecting on his past, Joel admitted, “I felt guilty about it. They had kids, you know? I felt like a homewrecker.” Despite this, Weber reiterated in her interview that “the house has been destroyed,” hinting at the deeper issues that plagued their relationships.
Weber shared a glimpse of her life post-divorce, stating, “We didn’t have any deep connections, John and I.” She felt a renewed sense of purpose after the birth of her son, Sean, calling him an adorable, precocious child who brought light to her life. After their marriage, Joel went on to marry supermodel Christie Brinkley in 1985, and they had a daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, before divorcing in 1994. They also share two daughters from subsequent relationships.
Regarding her relationship with Joel today, Weber expressed openness, saying, “If you want to talk to him or have anything to say, you can always contact him.” However, she also noted the distance that comes with time, adding that their connection remains cordial but limited, considering they divorced decades ago.
This year has been challenging for Joel; he was diagnosed with a brain condition that necessitated the cancellation of all his scheduled concert appearances. Weber commented on their young marriage, admitting that they both lacked the understanding needed at the time, admitting frustration about their life together and acknowledging the complications that arose.
Looking back, Weber acknowledged the bond they had, mentioning, “When you find someone you’re comfortable with… sometimes it’s a slow build.” Still, her feelings seem mixed; she suggested that perhaps she wasn’t the partner Joel truly desired.
The fallout of Joel’s confession of love for Weber to Small led to emotional devastation all around. Small recalled Joel’s heartfelt admission and how it marked a drastic shift in their friendship, as it ended up severing their ties. Joel later opened up about his feelings of despair, saying, “I thought that was it. I don’t want to live anymore.” Despite the betrayal, Small later found it in himself to forgive Joel, recognizing the turmoil that came from love and loss.
