Ovechkin Scores 900th Goal, Binnington Faces Backlash

During a recent game, Washington Capitals player Alex Ovechkin made headlines by scoring his 900th career goal, an achievement no one in NHL history has reached before. This remarkable milestone occurred in the second period against the St. Louis Blues, but not without some controversy involving Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington.

After Ovechkin’s goal, Binnington was seen trying to hide the puck behind his equipment, which took many by surprise. The linesman quickly intervened, retrieving the puck from the bewildered goalie.

When Ovechkin was later asked about Binnington’s actions, he simply said, “Oh, I just saw it. You know, I’m not going to comment on that.” Meanwhile, his teammate Logan Thompson offered a more tempered perspective, suggesting, “Maybe he was trying to grab it to give it to himself.”

On social media, reactions were less forgiving, and it appeared that Binnington’s confusion only amplified the situation. Ovechkin, however, managed to reclaim the puck and proudly posed with it afterward in the locker room.

Interestingly, no active NHL player is close to approaching 700 career goals, making Ovechkin’s milestone puck potentially quite valuable. Sidney Crosby, for instance, has 634 goals to date.

Binnington’s night didn’t improve as he allowed four goals during the game and was eventually pulled from the ice. The unfortunate incident marks the fourth time this season Binnington has surrendered at least four goals in a match. Earlier matches saw the Blues struggle as well, including a defeat against the Los Angeles Kings and a loss in penalties to the Vancouver Canucks.

As of now, the Blues find themselves in a challenging position, holding a record of 4-8-2 with a goal differential of -21, sitting at the bottom of the Central Division in the Western Conference.
